At Hacettepe University, a dedicated Disabled Student Unit provides support services to facilitate the learning experiences and social participation of students with disabilities. The unit works with registered students with special needs (ÇÖZGER/ESKR) and, based on individual interviews and assessments, collaborates with the Registrar’s Office, the Department of Health, Culture and Sports, faculty advisors and department chairs to resolve identified problems.

To ensure accessible learning materials and examinations, the unit informs faculty-based disabled student advisors and department heads, and makes recommendations on necessary adjustments, such as providing course materials in alternative formats, introducing exam accommodations and supporting transportation when needed. For students with visual and mobility impairments, inter-campus transportation support is provided to facilitate participation in exams and activities, while the unit also contributes to removing architectural barriers in cooperation with the university administration.

Within the UNI-101 “Introduction to University Life” course, the Disabled Student Unit informs newly enrolled students with disabilities about the academic, administrative, physical, psychological, social and accommodation support available in their first year and offers peer support throughout the course. The unit also provides consultancy to academic departments and student clubs regarding course, exam and social activity adaptations, and works with students to encourage their active participation in student club activities.

The unit organises awareness-raising seminars and training sessions for university staff and students on disability, and coordinates activities to promote inclusion and e-student integration. It also conducts research and evaluation activities to identify the needs of students with disabilities, monitor current practices and improve support. For students who request it, guidance and follow-up are provided to support career choice and employment success. In addition, part-time student support is offered within the Disabled Student Unit, giving priority to students from the same departments, thereby strengthening peer assistance and inclusive practice.
