SDG 16 - Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions

16.2.2 – Does your university as a body recognise an independent students’ union?

The principles for establishing a structure to ensure the democratic representation of students in Turkish universities are regulated by Law No. 2547 on Higher Education and Regulation on Student Representatives and the Student Council.

At our university, there is a Student Representatives Council established to protect students’ rights in meeting and developing their educational, health, sports, and cultural needs; to ensure their sensitivity to national interests; to establish effective communication between higher education institution management bodies and students, conveying students’ expectations and requests to management bodies; and to ensure student participation in decisions regarding education and training. Additionally, students and other stakeholder groups are represented on the board of directors and senate without voting rights. This supports participatory governance at the University.

Hacettepe University Student Representatives Council; conveys the opinions of the students to the senior management, organizes awareness activities, organizes spring festivals and culture and art activities, and organizes social responsibility and volunteering projects. You can access more detailed information about the activities of the council on social media addresses.
