SDG 3 - Good Health and Well-Being

3.3.6 - Does your university as a body have a "smoke-free" policy?

SMOKE-FREE AREAS

Hacettepe University is a leading institution that strongly supports tobacco control studies. Smoking is prohibited in all indoor areas on campus. In addition, smoking is prohibited in open areas within the designated boundaries of closed areas; These prohibited areas are clearly marked in front of each building. The sale of tobacco products is also prohibited in the shopping areas on campus campuses.

Hacettepe University Tobacco Control, Training, Implementation and Research Center takes regular initiatives to raise awareness about the harms of tobacco and reduce consumption. In 2019, with the contribution of the staff of Hacettepe, Bilkent and Başkent Universities, the “Step-by-Step Implementation Guide for Tobacco-Free Universities” was published in order to encourage tobacco control practices in higher education and to maintain these practices systematically in universities.

While the Smoking Cessation Unit serves within the Department of Preventive Oncology of the Faculty of Medicine, the Department of Public Health carries out education and awareness activities on tobacco use and risks in the society. In addition, Hacettepe Psychological Counseling Unit provides psychological support and guidance on tobacco addiction.
