SDG 3 - Good Health and Well-Being

3.3.2- Does your university as a body deliver outreach programmes and projects in the local community (which can include student volunteering programmes) to improve or promote health & wellbeing including hygiene, nutrition, family planning, sports, exercise, aging well, and other health and wellbeing related topics?

Hacettepe University carries out a mixed model of activities aimed at improving health and well-being:

  • Continuous (year-round content/service),
  • Periodic (campaigns/events repeated at regular intervals),
  • Annual Single (activities carried out once on a specific day/week of a specific year).

These studies are conducted in areas such as hygiene, nutrition, family planning, physical activity, healthy aging, chronic disease management, vaccination and immunization, skin cancer awareness, and health literacy; and are carried out by the Faculty of Medicine, Faculty of Health Sciences, Faculty of Nursing, Faculty of Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation, Institute of Public Health, the Vaccine Institute, and student volunteers. Target audiences: local communities, schools, youth, elderly individuals, chronically ill patients, and disadvantaged groups.

A)    “Public Information Series” – Department of Public Health, Faculty of Medicine

  • Periodic (published regularly during the academic year)

Hacettepe University Faculty of Medicine, Department of Public Health  regularly  and systematically  produces and shares training and awareness materials throughout the year under the title of “Information Series for the Society” in order to increase social health literacy  .  In the 2023-2024 period, it prepared and made available information documents for the society on topics such as combating addiction, protection from infectious diseases, antibiotic resistance, healthy nutrition, chronic disease management and environmental health in order to increase the health literacy of the society. All documents are published on the website of the Department of Public Health.
Topics include: substance addiction, prevention of infectious diseases, antibiotic resistance, healthy nutrition, chronic disease management, and environmental health.

  • Vaccine and Public Health Information Platform

Ongoing (2019–present) – Open access to evidence-based vaccine/immunization content.

Hacettepe University Faculty of Medicine Department of Public Health has created and made available the “Vaccination and Public Health Information Website” to increase public access to evidence-based, reliable, and up-to-date information on vaccination and immunization, which are critical to protecting public health. The website has been active since 2019.

The target audience of the Vaccination and Immunization webpage is individuals and communities seeking information on vaccination and immunization.

B)    Disease Awareness and Screening Events

  • EUROMELANOMA Skin Cancer Screening (May 22–29, 2024)

Annual Single Event (during international campaign week) – Free screening and early diagnosis awareness event.

Hacettepe University Faculty of Medicine conducted free, public skin cancer screenings as part of the EUROMELANOMA International Awareness Campaign held between May 22–29, 2024. The event was organized in collaboration with Hacettepe University Faculty of Medicine, the Turkish Dermatology Association, and Euro Melanoma. The event was held to promote early diagnosis of melanoma and other skin cancers in the community and to raise health awareness.

  • Antibiotic Awareness Day Seminar (November 22, 2024)

Annual Single Event (on World Antibiotic Awareness Day) – Public education on the consequences of inappropriate antibiotic use.

(Joint event: Hacettepe University–Baskent University)

Hacettepe University, in collaboration with Başkent University, organized a public awareness seminar as part of “Antibiotic Awareness Day” to raise awareness about antibiotic resistance in society. The event featured presentations titled “Antibiotic Resistance in Turkey and Worldwide” and “Human Behavior and Sociological Aspects of Antibiotic Resistance,” providing the public with clear education on the health consequences of improper antibiotic use.

C) Student Volunteering and Social Responsibility

  • Nursing Faculty Social Responsibility Student Committee

-World Diabetes Day event (November 14, 2024)

The Nursing Faculty Social Responsibility Student Commission and our hospital’s Diabetes Clinic organized a “World Diabetes Day Event.”

-World Pressure Injury Prevention Day (November 21, 2024)

On November 21, 2024, the Nursing Faculty Social Responsibility Student Commission organized an event as part of World Pressure Injury Prevention Day.

  • Hacettepe Hearing and Balance Society (HİDT)

Periodic (2014–ongoing student society activities) – Seminars/workshops and open-access periodical promoting hearing and balance health literacy in society.

The Hacettepe University Hearing and Balance Society is a student organization that has been active since 2014 with the participation of volunteer students and aims to raise awareness in society about hearing and balance health. The society aims to strengthen public health literacy by regularly organizing seminars, workshops, and social awareness events, as well as publishing open-access journals and informational materials.

Annual Individual – World Diabetes Day YouTube Broadcast

Hacettepe University’s Department of Nutrition and Dietetics has released a broadcast titled “The Well-Being of People with Diabetes on World Diabetes Day” on its official YouTube channel. In the broadcast, Prof. Dr. Selçuk Dağdelen, a faculty member of the Department of Endocrinology and Metabolic Diseases at Hacettepe University Faculty of Medicine, discusses the well-being of individuals with diabetes and current approaches.
